As teachers, we all seek ways to add peace into our classrooms, and one of the most effective methods in reducing the stress of your classroom is through meditation. In certain schools this practice is known as quiet time, and this activity is a way for students to improve their school day. Many benefits are associated with classroom meditation, and this activity might be one that you should add to your daily routine.

Meditation and Student Behavior

Many schools are implementing quiet time, or organized meditation, and consequently students are showing improvement in multiple areas. Although meditation is optional, many students taking part in this daily activity have an improvement in grades as well as their behavior in class. Many teachers find fewer kids are suspended or absent from school with this new practice. Having a time that students can mentally relax is instrumental in improving their behaviors. Students often act out in school because they are stressed out, and meditation is a way for students to collect themselves and center their thoughts. Everyone needs time to breathe throughout the day, and having a designated time to stop and meditate is positive for students and teachers alike.

Meditation Lesson Plans

Incorporating meditation into your school day may seem like a difficult task, but the right strategies make it easy to get your students on board. One of the most important aspects of introducing meditation at school is to talk to your parents. Your students need consistency and they are far more likely to participate in meditation time with a support system at home. Technically, through the process of meditation you are teaching mindfulness, and this can be a controversial topic. Most people think mindfulness is associated with religious beliefs, but this concept couldn’t be farther from the truth. Students use meditation to focus on positive thoughts, so that they can make their time at school more productive.

Meditation Apps

Another way that teachers incorporate meditation into their classrooms is through apps that offer resources. These apps have libraries full of content that create a seamless way for meditation to enter the classroom. Many of these apps also allow teachers to personalize their own content, so that they can fit the specific needs of their students. Mindfulness is an education tool responsible for preparing students for success, and these meditation apps are a way to ensure your students thrive in the classroom and their lives.

Additional Meditation Tools

Teachers utilize many resources to make meditation a fun practice in their classrooms. You can utilize scripts, timed meditation exercise, and many other tools to increase the participation of your students. When teaching meditation to students, one of the most important things to remember is participation is optional. Students need to have a positive experience when they are meditating, because the entire process is supposed to center around individuals creating harmony in their environment. Students forced into participation will have a negative view of meditation, which could give them a bad impression of mindfulness for the rest of their lives.

Prepare Students for Meditation

When students participate in quietude, they need to have a constructive space to complete their task. Before initiating the meditation, make sure that students have cleared off their desks to reduce distractions. Some exercises are popular where students might be reading or writing, and during these tasks they will have their materials on their work spaces. Those students that decline to participate in meditation need to respect the silence of the classroom, and occupy themselves with their own quiet activity. Initially you will struggle with students being disruptive during quiet time, but after a few weeks students will enjoy having this time of reflection.


Meditation is a time that students and teachers can reflect on their day and become more mindful.
